But....
After he died....
Everything changed....

A new Pharaoh took over Joseph's place, and didn't know how Joseph helped Egypt during the famine. As Pharaoh watched the Israelite's grow in number, he was afraid that they would outnumber the Egyptians and be much powerful. So, he made them as slaves for him, making bricks and building cities. Life became harder, but still the Israelite numbers grew. Finally, the Pharaoh gave cruel orders to kill any baby born boy from an Israelite family.

At this time, an Israelite woman had a baby boy. While he was very tiny and slept a lot, she managed to hide him. But after 3 months, it was very difficult. The baby was beginning to make a lot of noise!
So the woman made a basket from reeds and waterproofed it by covering it with tar. She placed the baby inside the basket and drifted it away in the river. Her daughter, Miriam, stayed close by to watch the baby.
Soon, as the Pharaoh's daughter came to the river to bathe, she saw the basket and as she opened it, the baby began to cry. She realized that the baby was an Israelite boy and felt sorry for him. Quickly Miriam stepped forward. "Would you like me to find someone to look after the child for you?" she asked. The Pharaoh's daughter agreed and, of course, Miriam ran to fetch her mother.

So the mother looked after the baby until he was old enough to live in the Pharaoh's palace. The Pharaoh's daughter gave the boy the name of Moses.
He was treated very well but, as he grew older he never forgot that he was an Israelite and it made him very sad to see his people treated as slaves.

One day, Moses saw an Egyptian master kill an Israelite worker.
He jumped at the Egyptian master and killed him.
Moses knew that the Pharaoh would hear about what he had done and ran away safely to the desert.

Moses lived in a land called Midian as a shepherd for a long time.
One day, as he was watching over his flock, he noticed that a bush was on fire. As he went closer to the burning bush he heard a voice saying, "I am God of Abraham and your ancestors. I have seen how the people of Israel are suffering. You are to go to the Pharaoh and free my people". Then Moses said, "Please choose someone else, no-one would listen to me anyway".
"You have been chosen", said God, "Go to Egypt, find Aaron, your brother, and go with him to ask the Pharaoh to set my people free".

So, Moses and Aaron went to the Pharaoh and said, "The God of Israel says you must let His people go!".
But the Pharaoh didn't believe in God and was very angry, so as punishment, he made the Israelite's work even harder than ever.
Moses went to tell God and God said, "I will force the Pharaoh to let my people go". "Go and tell him that if he refuses again, dreadful things will happen".

Moses and Aaron returned to the Pharaoh and when they asked him to let God's people free, he refused.
So, God turned the waters of the river Nile into blood.
Then frogs that swarmed all over Egypt. This was also followed by lice and flies. Only in Goshen, the place where the Israelite's lived, were the only ones free of these.
So then, one by one, all the animals in Egypt began to die, all except the ones in Goshen.
Then God covered all the Egyptians in boils.
Then, God sent hail. It hailed like no-one has ever seen before, like a thundering hail beating down the crops and remaining cattle in Egypt.
Plagues of locusts followed and ate all the leaves they could find even just a tiniest new leaf.
There was then darkness that filled Egypt and remained that way for 3 days.
The Pharaoh tried reasoning with Moses, but Moses said that all the Israelite's, men, women, children and cattle were to be freed, but the Pharaoh refused.
But the last plague was the worst, the eldest son of an Egyptian family, even the Pharaoh's, died. God warned Moses to mark the doorposts of all Hebrew houses so that the Hebrew boys would be safe. The Pharaoh was so upset about losing his son so he let the Israelite's go.

But after Moses and his people left, the Pharaoh changed his mind and send his soldiers after them. They caught up with the Israelite's at the Red sea. Moses stretched out his arm and God set a wind to blow back the water.
The Israelite's hurried across the pathway of dry land. When the Egyptian soldiers followed them across, the water rushed over them and drowned them all at once.
Moses' people were free! And the celebrated with music and songs.
